Hello, and a very warm welcome to the Wakefield Walking Women’s Network.
Formed back in 1993, we are a very friendly and welcoming ladies only walking group, with some of our founding members still walking with us regularly today.
Of course, walking is recognised as a healthy form of exercise, with benefits far beyond simply going for a walk. The NHS Website states "Walking is simple, free and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier" (www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/walking-for-health/ ) while the Arthritis website lays claim to 12 benefits of walking! (www.arthritis.org/health-wellness/healthy-living/physical-activity/walking/12-benefits-of-walking)
While walking offers us all this free and healthy form of exercise, it offers WWWN members much much more!
We currently have over 100 members of all ages and abilities who enjoy walking in the countryside, meeting people, making new friends and enjoying various social activities. Our walks, which are open to all women in the surrounding areas of Wakefield, are run on Thursdays and Sundays. There is absolutely no pressure to walk every week. Just come when you fancy the company or want to do a particular walk. You're invited to do the first 3 walks free of charge and to see whether it's your thing. If it is, you join the group by paying a membership fee of £5 per year which gives you access to the group's newsletter, and our Walks Programme.
Our walks are run and led by volunteers from within our group. Thursdays can be quite busy with 20, sometimes 30 or even 40 ladies on walks which are around the 6, 7 or 8 miles mark. Sunday walks are usually a little longer, around 10 miles, can be more strenuous, and run with smaller groups of 5, 6 or 7 ladies.
We start at the Walk Meeting Points, share directions to the start of the walks, and fill cars to share fuel costs. We wear proper walking boots, appropriate or wet weather gear, and more often than not a packed lunch is recommended. Sometimes there is a café or a pub at the end of the walk and we'll stop for a drink, or sometimes we just go back to base.
We're a sociable bunch; we have a meal out at Christmas, and we organise weekends away with walks from hotels or youth hostels. We organise weekends away on a fairly regular basis. Sometimes we stay at Youth Hostels, sometimes hotels. We usually arrange two walks of different lenghts each day over the weekend. There's always a lot of fun and laughter ....
If you are thinking of joining us, give a walk leader a call a day or so before a walk to let her know you are a thinking of turning up and she will be able to give you advice on the walk and look out for you with a welcome.
Or, if you'd like to hear more or have any questions please don't hesitate to call Joy on 01422 378260 (home) or 07825 476531 (Mobile) or email [email protected] for more information.
