the luddite trail

8 ladies joined me this Sunday for my walk 'The Luddite Trail' around Hartshead, Robertstown and Liversedge. We had lots of history about the raid on Cartwrights Mill at Rawfolds by the Luddites. We passed the pub 'The Shears Inn' where they met to plot and Jackson's Cropping shop.. Hartshead church where Robin Hood allegedly fashioned his last arrow from the ancient Yew in the graveyard. An Anglo Saxon Cross, an early Christian 'Lady Well' and all about Bullace trees and their crop as we passed the farm named after them. Despite the very heavy and tiring mud nobody became a 'Cropper'.........gerrit?

reservoirs Postponed

Holmfield-Ramsden and Digley reservoirs will have to wait for our company. Because of the snowfall overnight we thought it risky to travel to Holmfirth and instead Margaret - our venarable chairwoman - suggested we walk around Horbury, Thornhill, Netherton and Horbury Bridge instead.. Because we always trust and follow Maggie's lead we did and it was 8 miles of 'Winter Wonderland'.. Cheers Maggie and we look forward to the follow up in summer when a promised box of red wine and cheese and crusty roll will be on offer amongst her picturesque gardens!!!!

low ackworth

1st Thursday walk of 2016 and what a howler! Poor Regina did a fine job job of leading us through the leafy pastures of Ackworth but there was a lot of wading to be done through flooded paths. Lunch was a swift affair as by then we were all very damp. Of course by the time we were approaching the end of the walk the skies had cleared the rain had stopped and the wind had got up - chilling us to the bone - but never mind we 'enjoyed' the fresh air and re-grouping' swapping tales of Christmas and New Year indulgences. Well done Regina.
