We enjoyed lovely views across to Ossett from Low Lane and ended up paddling across the stream in Coxley. A good time had by all. - Stephanie
8 ladies and Clive the Yorkshire terrier attended the Horbury Bridge canal, Thornhill Park and Coxley walk on 16th September. The weather was lovely and sunny. We picnicked in Thornhill Park after exploring the island and reading up about the civil war and Thornhill Hall.
We enjoyed lovely views across to Ossett from Low Lane and ended up paddling across the stream in Coxley. A good time had by all. - Stephanie 5 of us met at the designated meeting point. Two phone calls later we had gained an extra one. Think I had woken the other one up.
We set off on what ended up being a confusing walk. I had mislabelled it as the Skelmanthorpe circular, where as really all it was, was a circular walk from Skelmanthorpe. Note to walkers - never assume the leader is going the way you think she is. My "Skelmanthorpe circular" took us up and down dale to Scout dyke dam in a circular motion. The weather was just perfect for walking, not too cool and not to hot. Taking in Gunthwaite Barn, which has an impressive history, brought to my attention after the walk. Think we did just over 10 miles in the end, but there was no complaints. - Chris Swift Margaret Smith and I prefer to work as a team. During Lockdown when we were allowed one to one walks Margaret and I became ‘walking buddies’. Today’s walk was found by Margaret and if I’m honest she’s done the majority of planning during this time for which I’m very grateful. Thank you to all who joined us to make this a special day. It was a circular including part of the Wakefield Way which we have almost completed as I know a lot of the group have accomplished during this time. We cut through an estate leading up to Outwood Academy and spotted Soggy Bottom Garage!! A very creative person obviously lives here! On approaching Lindale Hill some stopped to admire cute ponies. We spaced out on Lindale hill for lunch.Margaret Firth spotting a very hairy caterpillar ,Steph feeling very relaxed😅and Betty treating us all to yummy flapjack - thank you 😋.Some of us also found out what a cony is! Many thanks then to Pat C who suggested an alternative route to avoid trespassing through the Police Dog Training Establishment. At the end of Lawns Lane we came across The Old Schoolroom which was once used as a toffee factory. The toffees were sold on a stall on Wakefield market (this can be seen from the M1). On Lingwell Nook Lane we accosted a poor man with the usual friendly curiosity of the group to inspect his mini caravan! The humidity was getting to us as we came through Lofthouse Colliery Park and we thought we were hallucinating when someone spotted this face on the tree! We finished with a welcome cold drink at The Deep Drop pub. Think you can see the exhaustion on our faces! I’m told that some people were going bowling and line dancing that evening. Where do they find the energy? I have been in the group six years now and as Denise says I’ve come a long way! It’s taken me some time but it’s thanks to so many of you that I’m where I am now. I've learnt so much; so many thanks to you all for this. The walking group has been my lifeline at some points and you’ve all offered me so much support, experiences and lifts! with patience!
Long live the group with all its benefits and amazingly talented , friendly people. Gwenda.😊 Well done Hazel for completing nine miles. Just the two of us today, but the sheep tried to get in on the act at lunchtime!
A lovely walk rounded off with a swim on the way home. - Caroline Ruth, her husband and I walked from the cottage in Stokesley to Roseberry Topping up to the top and back, 12 miles and hard for me but I did it and enjoyed it.
