Sunday 29th July - Surprise View and Carr Beck

29/7/2019

On Sunday, Jayne W led a moderate 9 mile walk around "Surprise View" and Carr Beck.  She sent me this email and it tickled me to think the tantalisingly mysterious "Surprise View" almost backfired on her.  Here are Jayne's walk-words;

"On Sunday I promised a ‘Surprise view’ and as nobody knew where the walk was, anticipation was high!  Ha ha the joke was on me as the weather was so poor the view was virtually nil from the top of the Chevin.  However although the forecast was very likely ‘rain all day’ in fact it never did and was warm and humid.  So, as I was trussed up in waterproof trousers and long sleeved layers and carrying a box of home baked flapjack for everyone at lunchtime I can honestly say I lost an inch from each thigh by the time I came home – there’s always a silver lining!  Thanks for coming ladies."

I can't decide what's best, home baked flapjacks or losing an inch from each thigh! Judging by the happy faces below I'd say they've just eaten their flapjacks!

Sarah D led a walk from Reeth to Marrick Priory on Sunday.  Gwenda's photos show everyone enjoyed a lovely day. She says there was even a band playing on the Green for their return!

Thursday 11th July - The Luddite Trail  - Mirfield

It sounds like this was a great walk led by Caroline L, with post walk-words from Jennifer and great photographs as usual.

"In 1812 an army of Luddites  met at the Dumb Steeple prior to an attack on Cartwright's mill at Rawfolds.  Today, 23 walkers led by Caroline met at the same spot to follow in their footsteps for part of the way.  Caroline also did a a smashing job of telling us about the history of the area.

The walk took us through woodlands and meadows, with stunning views all around.  We had lunch in a pretty little garden full of lavender.  The weather was very kind to us, on our journey.  I wonder what it was like for the Luddites!

At the end of the walk we called at the Inn once called the Three  Nuns, supposedly haunted, to have a nice cool drink."

Thank you Caroline! Your first walk was a great success.
We all enjoyed it.

Thursday 4th July - Kirk Smeaton to Wentbridge through Brockadale Woods.

Joan's walk from Kirk Smeaton on Thursday attracted quite a crowd!  Jennifer sent this walk-talk in - a fitting tribute to what was, after all, Independence Day!

"25 walkers turned up for a lovely walk led by Joan J.  The walk was perfect for a hot day. We were mostly in and out of woods, passing streams, fields and meadows, full of wild flowers. The botanists among us were in their element naming the plants.
Along the way , we came upon a field of Alpacas. They were gorgeous, even though they'd had a close shave.
The last part of the walk, was through a hidden fairy kingdom. We've still all got the child in us, wonderful!  Then all back to the Shoulder of Mutton in Kirk Smeaton, for a nice cool drink."

Thank you Joan.  It sounds wonderful and I'm sorry to miss yet another lovely walk with great mates.
