Thursday 25th April - Horbury Bridge

26/4/2019

We all think we're invincible, don't we?  Well, I've been clumsy all my life and last Thursday was no different.  I fell into an emty milk crate as I climbed over a stile so I was still nursing a dodgy hip yesterday and didn't walk.  It looks like I missed out on a good day, for all the horrible weather which was forecast.

Jennifer sent these two lovely photos and a walk report ...

"26 of us started at Horbury bridge, and made our way up to Cocksley Valley.  We ate a picnic lunch in Thornhill rectory park. The views were fabulous as usual. The weather was kind to us; we only had a couple of quick showers. A lovely day was had by all."

She topped off her report with words which made me even more envious ...
"Most of us then went to Boscos for coffee and cake."

Thanks Jennifer!

Sunday 22nd April - Stanley Ferry

23/4/2019

Gwenda and Margaret led a walk on Sunday, and Margaret sent this walk report and photos.  Thanks Margaret.

"It was sunshine and blue skies all the way for our walk from Stanley Ferry. There was blossom on the trees, bluebells in the woods, and lots of butterflies to enhance a beautiful spring day. We had a coffee stop at the 3 ponds near Newland, and lunch was taken in St Peter's churchyard to the accompaniment of organ music and Easter hymns. An added bonus was being able to use the toilets in the church! Tea and cake was available in the church but we resisted, having already had chocolate Easter eggs and bunnies (and not forgetting Gwenda's delicious flapjacks)!"

Thursday 18th April - Cannon Hall

21/4/2019

Thursday saw the start of a few days beautiful weather leading up to the Easter weekend so Bronner's walk from Cannon Hall Country Park through Cawthorne, Barnby & Clough Green was well attended.  I think there were about 26 of us enjoyed the beautiful walk that Bronner's shared with us, through a lovely range of countrysides; pastures, woodlands with streams, bluebell woods, fields with views. You couldn't ask for more of this 6 mile walk ... except perhaps fewer stiles.  Our specialist stile-counter totted up at least 30!  I think it was worth it AND I fell over one so the walk must have been good!

Our walk ended back at Cannon Hall ... well, actually for most of us it finished over the road at Thyme Bistro, the Garden Centre's coffee shop, with some cracking cakes and coffees.

Here are some of my photos.  Feel free to forward any to me if you have any more?

10 minute warning - thanks Ann!

This reminds me of that caption ... "I must, I must, improve my bust!"

It might have been a 10 minute warning but nobody's taking any notice!

Just under a mile to go as Bronners leads us all back safely. She's clearly very proud!
Thank you Bronners - a great walk!

Sunday 14th April - Holmfirth

14/4/2019

Chris led a 12 mile walk around Holmfirth today.  She dutifully (and very promptly) sent this brilliant walk report in to me, together with two photos.

Beautifully lead walk around Holmfirth, with just a few hills.  (She's definitely modest, is our Chris!)  Five ladies and two dogs decided to join me.  Had lunch in Hagg Wood. Walk said 12 miles but Diane's thingy said 10.5 so all felt a bit cheated but not enough to walk a bit more.  Two new potential ladies; Patricia on her second free walk and her friend Angela (don't think we put them off !!)

In trying to keep up with Jane W's "anthrax" biscuits, flapjack was provided but only at a certain point. In a mutiny Patricia headbutted a dry stone wall just so we could all have one/two sooner !!!

Our first responder was there with tissues, wipes and plasters to hand (for Angela - as she doesn't like blood !!).  It was pointed out when I got home that I should have sent Patricia home with a "bumped head" letter !!

Thanks Chris!

I couldn't resist the vaguely biblical caption for this picture - "Five ladies and two dogs"

I'm told this is "The bench that should have been "flapjack" bench."

Thursday 11th April - Silkstone Common

11/4/2019

Judith led a cracking walk today.  18 of us walked from Silkstone Common in a loop through some beautiful countryside with great views.  Of course, good views usually means hills, and yes there were some.  We walked through fields, woodlands, parkland and a few pretty hamlets, stopping for a picnic lunch.  Judith had even pre-booked the sunshine! We were joined by two new girls, whom we hope will come out walking with us again soon.  The weather was cold to start off with but turned into a beautiful day where coats were consigned to rucksacks and lots of us walked in t-shirts and fleeces.

My gizzmo recorded 9.2 miles and the route is below if you're interested in seeing where we went or want to print off the map to do the walk.

Thanks Judith; I thought I was pushing myself at 8 miles and look what we did in the end!  Feeling pretty stretched now though; I think I'll sleep well tonight!

March - Bingley - a late arrival

6/4/2019

This is a late arrival from Jill.  It's another one of the Packhorse bridge over the river Aire, from her Bingley walk a week ago, where everyone looks smiley in the lovely sunshine.  Thanks Jill

Thursday 4th April - Gawber and Higham

4/4/2019

Despite the cold forecast (4 degrees at 10:00 am) it was a busy turnout for Gillian and Geri's walk from Gawber today with 31 of us setting off in bright weather.  It was a 5.5 mile walk from St Thomas's Community Centre, through tracks, fields and woodlands, with some lovely views.  The going wasn't too wet either and we only hit a few muddy patches.  My boots don't even need cleaning today!

There may be further walking photos to follow from other people, but just for now, below are a couple of the group as we came across a delightful herd of ponies.

At the end of the walk we were offered tea, coffee and cake back at the Community Centre.  It would have been rude not to partake - see evidence below.  Sometimes its good to be the photographer and not the photographed!

Thank you Gillian and Geri - for a lovely walk and some gorgeous cakes too!
Picture
The eagle-eyed of you will have spotted that my gizzmo didn't record a full loop of the route today. That's not because I was lying above about where we went. It's because I forgot to switch my gizzmo on right at the beginning of the walk. Come back soon Jane, AKA Queen of the gizzzmo reminders!

Some of our womenfolk enjoying cake.  Some of them had already enjoyed it - they got to the cakes fastest!

Ooh!  I almost forgot!  Anne M dug a receipt from her Rucksack today and asked me to share it with you all.  It's from the walk she led around Notton on 10th January where £64.00 was raised from the sale of cakes.  That's an awful lot of cakes folks!  Well done!

Thursday28th March - Bingley

3/4/2019

Jill's Bingley walk prompted this walk report from Janet.
"A select little group arrived by train in Bingley, to follow the river Aire on tracks past daffodil fields and deer, hiding in the woodland, carpeted with celandine and wood anemone,  Climbing the hillside we picniced at Druids Altar, overlooking the town. (No photos here I’m afraid.  Too busy struggling up the incline and recovering my breathe at the top!)  After a pleasant stop at the “Ivy Kitchen“ cafe at St. Ives there was an easy route back downhill through tree lined shade to the return train journey home. Thanks to Jill."
