Sunday 28th October - Pately Bridge

30/10/2019

Chrissie led the 8.5 miler on Sunday from Pateley Bridge to Brimham Rocks.

The walk started in sunshine and was uphill (of course) following old packhorse trails through tiny hamlets and leafy woodland paths.  Glorious Nidderdale views began unfolding with Yorke’s Folly in the distance and the autumnal colours of Guise Wood.

Lunch was taken just below the Rocks and then we started descending (hooray) to the raging torrent that was the Nidd, following the riverbank all the way back to Pateley. Super walk and super company thank you Chrissie.

Wow!  Two walks today being run simultaneously, both with photos, and here they are, both hot off the press! Thank you all.

Judith's walk - a moderate to strenuous
9-10 mile walk from Healey to
Mousehole Lane and Thornhill Edge.

Go on then, just a swift one in the pub

Walk words from Judith
"13 keen walkers came on a 10 mile walk from Healey (the verdict at the end was "Moderate" rather than "Strenuous"). We had a bright sunny start with an early challenge negotiating a flooded tunnel under the railway.

Those with waterproof boots just splashed through! The canal was lovely and some observant walkers spied a kingfisher."

(Kingfisher?  Kingfisher? I'm SO jealous!)

"We sheltered under a bridge during the only heavy shower of the day. Beautiful Hagg Wood provided a delightful lunch spot in dappled sunshine. The summit of our climb gave us excellent views north towards Dewsbury and Mirfield, south towards Middlestown and Grange Moor. Yes, there was mud! But not too much. We walked at good pace and finished around 3pm with rosy cheeks and boots fairly clean and dry. The Brewers Pride provided welcome rest and refreshment, fine beer and roaring fires."

Lesley's walk - an easier 5.5/6 mile walk
with slight inclines around
Cawthorne and Deffer Wood.

Walk words from Lesley
"12 ladies (above) joined Lesley's impromptu 6 mile walk today from Cawthorne. The weather behaved itself and the obstacles in our way were no match for these determined ladies.

Lunch was taken both inside and outside the summer house in Deffer Wood and tea and cakes were enjoyed after the walk at the Thyme Bistro."

Thank you all for your contributions of walk words and photos.  I wish I could have been there with you and yes, you know me. I'd have gone for the easier walk too!

Enid and Alan mark 60 years of married life

Horbury couple Enid and Alan Braddock married at Grove Methodist Chapel in Marple, Cheshire in 1959 and spent their honeymoon in Arklow, Co Wicklow in Ireland.

A former RAF radar operator and an NHS nurse will mark 60 years of marriage with family and friends this weekend.

Alan worked for five years on radar in the RAF and on leaving with the Ferranti company on guided missile guidance systems.  He then spent 28 years as a computer engineer with IBM, retiring in 1990.

Enid became a state registered nurse and eventually served as an NHS health visitor for many years in and around Ossett.

The couple were very keen rock-climbers and their enthusiasm for outdoor sports and the outdoors continued through out their lives together.

The enjoyed holiday climbing in Italian Dolomites and mountainous areas in France and Switzerland.

Alan became a marathon runner, completing the first London Marathon in 1981 and subsequently some 58 running events of marathon length including a few longer races up to 100km.

Enid was a keen walker and together they completed many via ferrata, which are climbs assisted by wire ropes and ladders.

Mr Braddock became an enthusiast for the study of fungi and for several years was the recorder and editor of the Mid-Yorkshire Fungus group. The couple continue to record and study fungi.
The couple have daughter and a son – Susan and Ian – as well as six grandchildren and two great grand-daughters.

Mr Braddock said: “It’s been a great life and we still hope for it to go on and to enjoy life with our friends and family."

Hello Members!

A group of us have just returned from a fabulous trip to Grasmere. We were blessed with perfect weather, enjoyed some beautiful walks, served great food, stayed in gorgeous surroundings and most of all enjoyed the company of so many lovely friends!

On behalf of all the group I would like to say a big Thank You to Diane who organised it all, plus the walk leaders Pat, Janet, Caroline,Chris & Dianne, plus Sue for the entertainment. I apologise if I've missed anyone.

It was such a good weekend that I have now booked it for 14th/15th May 2021!!!!!!!!!!!! How's that for forward planning?!!

So when you move on to your 2021 diary you already have a date to put in it! Don't say you weren't forewarned.

Happy Walking Everyone
Elaine
