Thanks Janet. - Caroline
Today there were 22 ladies who came for the 4 mile (ish) walk led by Janet. It was a lovely walk over fields, through woods and along tracks. Some local history and descriptions of the views we could see to get our bearings. Topped off with our lunch in Janets garden so 'proper' seats and tables.
Thanks Janet. - Caroline A poor start today; traffic light malfunction on the Stanley ferry bridge over the canal, which led to traffic queues. A poor finish too – the pub was closed for maintenance until 3pm (walk finished 2.15!) Undeterred we started 15 minutes late and some of us went for a coffee at Carr Gate garden centre.
The bit in the middle was well attended by 27 ladies who managed the few icy stretches with just one, very graceful, fall. The sun shone and the sky was blue. The company was good as ever. A picnic in the sun and a good day out. I was bought to task over my description of ‘three challenging stiles’ as there were 6 stiles! In my defence, I though 3 were ‘easy’ .... and its a good job I am not treasurer! I would like to thank Janet for putting on a ‘shorter’ walk and was a little disappointed that there were no takers as such – though 3 ladies did take the slight short cut nearer the end. This meant Janet walked further and faster than she would have preferred, so thank you Janet. Caroline Thank you to all 18 WWWN friends who cheerfully turned the challenge of the flooded river valley and change of route into a really enjoyable Winter walk. We encountered the first signs of Spring in the snowdrops, catkins and hellebores. We found the 9 highland cattle employed to graze the vegetation over the Winter enabling the wild flowers on the magnesian limestone ridge to flourish in due season. They were wearing their electronic collars to keep them in their controlled designated area. We also learned about the measures to curb the spread of deadly Ash dieback disease from the Yorkshire Wildlife team ( 3 girls and 1 man!!) who were felling the affected trees in the woodland.
A great day out! - Joan J. Having just checked the programme, to see how I "sold" the walk, saw in fact I had just put 10miles, no "ish". Which is very unusual and possibly an over-sight, as apparently the walk was 12 miles.(According to some pedometers). The Leeds Country Way leaflet said 5miles, but what is a few miles between friends!!?? A mixture of paths, pavements and mud took us to Golden Acre Park. With a slight detour through a wood, coming out a bit too low, but in correcting ourselves, saw 5 Row deer, which would have been missed if we hadn't taken a "Swifty bonus". The comfort of a bench and lavotories were enjoyed. 11.53am wasn't too early for lunch as everyone was ready for it. The same route was used on the way back to the car, a bit like the "Bear hunt story" when we got to the mud - we can't go round it, we can't go over it, we'll have to go through it - again!! There where a few aeroplanes coming in to the airport - one of the reason's I wanted to do this part of the LCW again, but not that many. The complains about the mud - where ignored by the leader, who also failed to provide the usual sweets, but luckily a few "proper walkers" came to the rescue as they didn't fancy my finally remembered jelly babies that have now been in my sac for nearly two years. The weather was a lot kinder than we thought it might be, so only a bit of rain - just when we started lunch. . Chris S
The first walk of the year brought out 26 ladies. Who chatted their way around a lovely route led by Carole from Angler's Country Park. Every time there was a short pause a bag of sweets or chocolates got passed around, most of the time more than one packet.
The route was pure luxury as it started with a proper toilet. Lunch was at Nostell Priory, where we were allowed to have our sarnies in the courtyard on chairs with tables and a proper toilet. And finished with a lovely cup of coffee in the café, next to the toilet. There was of course the obligatory mud and Carole went a slightly different route due to flooding, but the weather was kind and not too much rain. - Chris S |
