Friday 27th March - Corona Communications

27/3/2020

As you all know, the Walks Programme has been cancelled until further notice, so I thought it might be useful for anyone who wants to send message to the group to use this blog to post your messages.

Feel free to blog away on this page!

Monday 23rd March 2020 - WALKS PROGRAMME CANCELLED WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT

23/3/2020

Wakefield Walking Women's Network
Programme of Walks

CANCELLED THROUGHOUT UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

During the last week or so, walk after walk from our Programme has been cancelled, culminating in 6 cancellations today alone.  We need to follow Government guidelines in response to Coronavirus to the full, both as a group and as responsible human beings.  We regret having to take this decision but the WWWN committee today decide that there is no alternative but to cancel the present Walks Programme in total and for the foreseeable future.

All walks organised and supported through the WWN are cancelled with immediate effect – Monday 23rd March 2020 – until this dreadful period is over, when we will come back fighting fit and recommence the Walks Programme.

Wishing you all the best in the meantime.  Stay safe.

Sunday 23rd March - Follifoot

22/3/2020

What fabulous weather it has been for walking today.  The recent sunshine and breezes have dried up all the muddy fields and trackes, so they were just waiting to be enjoyed.

Chris W sent me these photos.  She says "Lovely walk today from Follifoot. Weather has been brilliant .  Seven of us have walked in the sunshine to Spofforth where we had lunch & abided by the 'social distance ' rule"   It looks like the spring lambs were all abiding by the same rule too!

Wakefield Walking Week 2020 - Cancelled

20/3/2020

Message Received from Jon Ainsworth - Wakefield Council

With the ongoing situation arising from the Covid-19 (Corona) virus outbreak and the latest advice from the government regarding social distancing we have decided to cancel all sessions included in the Wakefield Walking Week.

I would like to thank you all for your contribution to the week. It really shaped up to be a diverse programme of events and was generating lots of interest.

With the uncertainty of how things are going to evolve we have postponed the current programme of Wakefield Health and Nordic Walks until further notice.

We are following the latest government guidance and will be operating as soon as this changes to allow the walking programme to re commence.  In the meantime, stay safe during this period.

Thank you for all your support.
Kindest regards
Jon Ainsworth
Health Improvement Officer (Adults, Walking & Cycling)

IMPORTANT NOTICE - CORONA (COVID-19) Monday 16th March 2020

20/3/2020

WWWN takes the welfare of our members very seriously so we’re following government guidelines closely in light of the spread of coronavirus.  Boris Johnson has today requested that as a nation, we restrict socialising and avoid unnecessary travel.

As a group we all know the benefits of walking, getting fresh air and exercise, so we do not want to cancel our walks programme if this is avoidable. Equally, we do not want to put any of our walk leaders or walkers at risk.

We have therefore currently decided to leave the decision to individuals; whether walk leaders are happy to lead their walks, and whether members want to join the walks on the day.

If any walk leader feels they should follow guidelines and cancel their walk, please email the Secretary on [email protected] asap so the Walks Programme can be adjusted and the web site updated accordingly in good time.

Thank you

Saturday 14th March - a note from Chrissie

14/3/2020

Chrissie received an email from the Forget Me Not Children's Hospice in Huddersfield.  Here's the gist of it.  Vicky Stackhouse is the event coordinator and her details are at the bottom of this page if you want more information.

We’re taking to the streets on a sponsored walk around Huddersfield
– and we’d love your group of walkers to join us!

Starting and finishing at our hospice, Russell House, we’ll cover a 10 mile circuit of Huddersfield with pit stops at John Smith’s Stadium, Almondbury, Castle Hill
and St George’s Square along the way.

And by wearing something purple (like a Forget Me Not t-shirt or hoodie) on the walk, we’ll bring a little bit of Forget Me Not magic to our home town, raising awareness in the community of our children’s hospice and the support we provide to local children and families.

It's all happening on 4th April, from 10am. Want to walk this way? Then put your best foot forward and get your tickets now at www.forgetmenotchild.co.uk/walk

We look forward to seeing you there!

Thursday 5th March -Brodsworth, Pickburn, Hooton Pagnall, and Hampole

14/3/2020

Bronners led this walk, and afterwards two photos arrived from Ann K, evidencing that through the misty trees, Spring is on its way with native daffodils and snowdrops in Hampole wood.

Then, having said Spring is on its way, Ann defied me with another photo showing a reccy walk around Emley with Stephanie M, with snow on the Pennines!
Picture
No, I thought.  That can't be.  Surely they're clouds - not snow!?  Then I blew the photo up - and by 'eck Ann's right. Tis snow!
